Located on Crete’s southern coast, approximately 68 km southwest of Heraklion, Matala is one of the island’s most iconic seaside destinations. Once an important Minoan and Roman harbor, the area is also linked to ancient mythology, as it is believed to be the place where Zeus brought Europa ashore. Matala became world-famous in the 1960s and 1970s as a hippie haven, when the carved caves in the surrounding cliffs were inhabited by the “flower children” seeking freedom and a simple life by the sea. Today, the caves remain a striking landmark, blending history and counterculture in a unique coastal setting.
